Montalbano’s Vigata
and Andrea Camilleri
Andrea Camilleri is one of the most famous Italian writers, renown especially for its novels whose main character is the Inspector Salvo Montalbano.
Camilleri is sicilian, born in Porto Empedocle, and he makes this city – which back in the day was a fishing village – an inspiration to narrate Montalbano’s Vigata.
Today, right at the entrance of Porto Empedocle, it’s possible to read the name “Vigata” next to the one of the real city. Thanks to the notoriety and the success reached by the tv series “The Inspector Montalbano”, the fictional city of Vigata has become so famous as to attract a “fictional” turism.
Montalbano’s Sicily
Montalbano’s home, which in the tv series is located in the fictional place called Marinella, is actually in Punta Secca, a fishing village in Ragusa’s province.
This side of Sicily, thanks to Camilleri’s narrative mastermind, has become an “itinerant novel”, and it includes Ragusa Ibla, Donnalucata, Punta Secca and Marina di Ragusa.
